here comes some advice from an old fuker (@ least by HAN standards):

i am a 33 year old male that has had kidney stones not once, but TWICE the first time i had one, i had a radioactive scan & they said i had one & it was 8mm (~5/16" or about the size of a standard #2 pencil) if you dont think that is a big deal, take a piece of metal that size & cut jagged edges on it & jam it in the end of you piss hole i was suppused to have the ultrasonic frequency the next morning, but i passed it w/out an pain med that night.

the next time i had 'em was about 18 months later. this time, i had 12 & they were all less that 3mm, so they passed w/ alot less pain. they sent those off along w/ the first one & determined that they were phosphate deposits, more than likely from caffeine. i had a (3) 20oz dr.pepper a day & half-gallon of ice tea habit that i quit like THAT *snap fingers*. since then (almost 2 years) i haven't had ANY caffeine. i drink only water, oj, & gatorade. i also haven't had another kidney stone. *knocks on wood*

to those who haven't had the pleasure of having one, here is what it feels like:

for me i was sound asleep & i awoke with a severe pain in the kidney area (felt like some body gave me an uppercut right above the belt in the back). next was the cold sweats. followed quickly with lightheadedness & a desire to hug the toilet & puke. the only thing that came out was fluid.

here is what my doc told me:

the pain is caused by the stone falling through the pathways in the kidneys & becoming lodged. laying on your back tends to make it 10x worse & is why you will usually be hit with the pain while sleeping.

here's a remedy i found for the pain:

since the stone is being pulled down through the kidney by gravity, i have found that if i can stand on my head till the pain goes away, then i'm good for a few hours till it gets lodged again. they look like a grain of salt or a snowflake. they are basically just a mineral dposit that builds on itself. which is hardly ever smooth.

they also say that it is the closest a guy will ever come to experiencing the pain of childbirth. from my experience, if this is what you ladies go thru having kids, i just have to say........
