the synchros are what matches teh revs between the tranny and the engine while the two are seperated (as in when you have the clutch depressed), they are generally not that bad price, but they are a bitch to replace thus expensive to have someone else do
so im guessing you have to unbolt the tranny from the engine right? probably a stupid question
