Pumping the lever gets the auto-adjuster to work, that's to compensate for brake pads wearing out.

There's an adjusting nut buried in the console, kinda behind the pivot point of the lever. That's for a stretched-out cable.

Don't use one adjustment to compensate for the other, they BOTH have to be right or else it'll probably just get worse.
