I assume it's a cable clutch, since you adjusted it. How long has the problem been going on? Normally for a cable clutch, you want about 1/2 inch of dead pedal at the very top. Dead pedal is really easy to feel, it's so loose you can just rest your toe on it and the pedal drops. No spring resistance like the clutch travel.

It could also be just worn components. If you drive your car hard, or if the tranny is high-miles, and the problem came on gradually, then it could be just an old transmission.
