how do u know if it will work when installed?

im going today with a mechanic to look at a private sale just so he can ask some smart questions.
those who have experience what should i be aware of? this motor is legit and comes with papers.
would it be smart to get him so sign a 'contract' to give my $$ back if it doesnt work?
