Default winter proofing the car

Some people have suggested that with winter coming and the try cold weather that it can dry out and cause the rubber molding to crack/harden.

True? False?

If that's true, they have suggested applying some form of moisturizer to the moldings such as some basic hand moisturizer or Vasaline to more exotice molding dressings made just for that type of situation.

I never did anything like that to my previous cars.... should I?
