It's not that they actually check all the items and stuff. It's just to get the idea into people's heads that it might be a bit more risky to try and gank a few extra things in yer bag.
Plus those people are also there that if you walk out the door and set off the alarm they can grab ya and keep you from getting out of the store if you don't come back and show em the receipt.

just wondering though, if there are any costco, best buy or other store employees that know the reasons firsthand?
