Get it in as far as you can, then slide it into the knuckle, and swing the knuckle to pop it into the tranny. No damage to the axle, and no damage to the knuckle.

but usually my boy is in the garage with me so when i do axle replacements on customer cars,..i usually just have him pop the axle into place,..he just shoves that bastard till it clicks,..6'3 pushing 300 pounds,..having friends like that usually has some advantages
