It doesn't matter what the next letter is, for so long as you don't have a consonant-sounding letter.
an honest person
an apple
an understanding
See, "honest" has a first letter with a silent 'h'.
a cell phone
a wallet
a hero
Notice that in "hero" the 'h' is pronounced. That's when you say "a" instead of "an".
