BLUF: 5W20 Synthetic Mobil 1 is what the Hubby insists is the only oil for the engine.
BLUF2: Neighbors own 4dr Neon & Ext Dakota. Hubby buys Pilot for wife trading the 4dr sedan. (They have 2 kids that she has to drive 20miles to work). Now, since "HE" makes the payments and that there is NO Mobil1 5W20 to be found in the area, he doesn't allow her to drive the Pilot forcing her to drive the kids (with one in the ext Cab) around in the Dakota. He takes it during the week to his class where the truck sits and isn't being used.
I was hoping the forum could help me give her some ammunition to shoot holes in his lies, but alas no.
That is the biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard
1) Synthetic oil is useless on Honda engines like the J35. They are low revving, highly durable engines. I can see synthetic on a K20A RSX Type-S or B18C5 Integra Type-R engine, but on a Pilot it's a complete waste of money. That's my opinion after talking with Honda technicians.
2) After doing 2 mins of research, 5W-20 is specified for the Honda Pilot. Very few companies make synthetic 5W20 for various reasons that would take too long to explain, but I think you can imagine.
3) It is possible to use 5-30 or 10-30. But like I said, synthetic oil is a complete waste in the J35 of the Pilot. Honda makes such reliable engines with such tight tolerances that synthetic will probably not matter at all. I drive a 98 Accord V6 (J30A1) with 126,000 miles. The suspension is starting to go, but the engine sounds and performs better than the day I bought it. I've never used synthetic oil once.
It's absolutely asinine to not drive the Pilot because there is no synthetic oil available. Her husband is a complete and utter moron. My neighbor has 2 kids and has a satin silver Pilot EX, and she has 8k on it. She gets her oil changed at the dealership, regular 5W-20, and it seems to run just fine.
