You'd have less of a chance of screwing up the wheel bearing if you could somehow hang the hub so it's facing upwards and have a hole that the stud could fall down through. That way, when you hit the stud with the hammer, the object that the hub is hanging from would take all of the impact force and you could still get the stud out through the hole.... hmmm...
