I say do it. Why buy another used car that's going to need work too? Why buy a new car and have payments? Take what you would be paying in payments/intrest and fix up your car. That's what I'm doing, and I don't have any regrets. Engine swap, and i'll basically have a brand new car. Paint/suspension/brakes/interior have all been done. Just be sure that you are willing to keep your car for a long time. Selling it in 2-3 yrs would be a waste of money.
