Rattling balance shaft? It doesn't sound like a bearing noise, but I've never dealt with a balance shaft before. You might also want to check your engine mounts.

Have you used a stethoscope to listen to the engine yet? Those are really helpful for diagnosing internal stuff. Listen all around the cams and valves, and down near the oil pan.
