The article, and the quote from the BMW exec, says only inline sixes for the US, but I'd be willing to bet they'd offer the current 1.8 inline four for the base model. The only engines I can see them using are the existing 2.0L (they have it in Canada but the US doesn't get it) and the 2.5L they have now. I don't think they'd develop an all new engine for their lowest car, and I can't see them stepping on the new 3-serie's toes with something too powerful.
Its actually a 2.2L...
