sounds to me like a lack of fuel pressure. When you turn the wheel, a load is placed on the engine requiring more gas. (load from power steering pump) You probably have a leak in the fuel system somehwere, and that is what is causing both the drop in rpm and smell. Does the car accelerate like it usually does as well?
