The 240sx was probably only runing on two cylinder's With a Grizzly bear as a driver. If it was a LS with a GS-R engine Then yes, otherwise there had to be NOS involed. Cause I raced a manual GS with my auto and I get the same results as you stated the GS did to the 240sx, no lie.
I drove my sister's 95 automatic 240SX and got beat by a half car by my friend's automatic Civic EX w/ I/H/E on 17's. I can ****in rock my friend's Civic in my GS with just Intake/Clutch/Flywheel. I came to the conclusion that I could beat an automatic 240 by atleast 3-4 cars. So even for me, a manual wouldn't beat me by more than a car. RWD and low end power hypes them up. My sister had nothing but problem after problem with hers. Not saying it's every 240, but Honda definitely takes Nissan in reliability.
