Your Dad is right.
In the winter, 1 minute idling is more than enough time, then just drive the car, but take it very easy on the accelerator until the car is fully warmed up.

Anything more than that is just a waste of gas, and is actually bad for the car. Excessive idling is actually bad for engines, and contaminates your oil.
