Default Car warm up question...

Ok i cant seem to get a strait anwser on this, but most of the time (meaning if i am not in a hury) i will let my car idle for a few minutes, even if its warm outside, when its being started for the first time that day. My theroy is that when things heat up they expand, thats a lot of parts in an engine that expand and contract, so i figure the slower, and more easy you do it, the better for your engine.

Now my dad tells me that i shouldnt do that, that its bad for the car, and i should jut start it and go, but be easy on it for a the first few minutes.

I dont know whos right, i usually just let my car idle until it idles down to 800 (where it usiually rests when its up to operating temp) and that usually takes a minute or two...

Is it bad? ANy input would be useful

Thanks
