it will only put a constant drain on the battery if something is drawing power from the socket (cell phone charger, radar detector, etc)

don't wire direct to the battery. find a hot lead somewhere near the fusebox and tap that. USE A FUSE! especially important with power sockets that could have anything at all plugged into them...or could have something small and metallic dropped into them connecting the positive tip contact and ground sleeve.
