Usually if you frag a shift fork, it will take out your 1 & 2 gear, or your 3 & 4. A busted fork doesn't usually make it pop out of only one gear, it will pop out of both 1 & 2 or both 3 & 4. He's only popping out of second.
Linkage is a good thing to check first. Especially because it's a hell of a lot less expensive, and a lot easier to fix. If he fixes his linkage and it still does it, then bye bye gearbox, but I'm not going to tell him to pull his tranny because his linkage is bad. That's like telling someone to swap their engine because their alternator died.
