the core system did well in sales, but it wasn't as close as most people think. the genesis' sales started to go to the crapper when the SNES surfaced. sega's reaction to the whole thing ... let's release a $300 cd based add on. it bomed. sega's reaction to the later generation games like Yoshi's Island and Mario Kart ... let's release a $200 32 bit add on. it bombed.
the SNES game developers had Sega owned. Sega always had to play catchup by releasing gimicky addons, repackaged systems, and controllers with 6 buttons ... because the other guy had it.
(remember the genesis 2? it was almost the same dimensions as the SNES)
the core genesis was fine, but the damn add ons deemed it a failure that was always trying to keep up.
