The general idea (or myth?) that a lot of people gave me about VTEC was that it acted like some kind of turbo. The first VTEC ride I ever got was on a S2000, and believe me, the car flies past 6000 RPM. Also, a lot of thread about RSXer at www.clubrsx.com describe VTEC like a surge of power and noise when VTEC engages. They also describe the VTEC of a GS-R being more severe than a RSX type-s:/ My assumption was based on that.
Gsr's have V-tec, it kicks in 5300 rpm-7900rpms
Rsx's have The i-VTEC system (the "i" stands for "intelligent") combines Honda's patented VTEC system (Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control) with Honda's cam position-adjusting VTC system (Variable Timing Control) to enhance low rpm torque while extending high rpm horsepower. i-VTEC = VTEC + VTC

Since the GSR has a less refined v-tec system the "surge" of power engages in a smaller power band of 5300-7900 Rpms, unlike the RSX with a much wider power band whereas the vtec is distributed almost throughout the entire rpm range.

The reason for this "surge" of power or quick transition/ activation of vtec is because it kicks in at such higher Rpms. While the Rsx's vtec has been activated much earlier and because of the VTC it is smoother throughout the rpm range, which makes it a lot less noticeable.

I can definitely feel my v-tec. The point where Ican feel it really kick in is around 6000Rpms.
