not a dumb question. I wouldn't go from 70mph to 2....you can go from D3 to D. avoid downshifting if it puts you near redline like that.
otherwise downshifting won't hurt. heck, running on the highway will do more harm as it's highway speeds that typically build up the high heat that kills trannys.
just keep away from redlines and be safe on slick roads.
