Default 1987 integra water pump

just changed the water pump and timing belt on my sons 87 integra. the water pump seemed to be thicker and after starting the car the timing belt started smoking. tore engine back apart to find that the timing belt had rubbed against the lower pump bolt near the tensioner pulley. guess due to pump being thicker there is no clearence left. anyone hear of this prolem?
this is a rebuilt water pump. THANKS
