Well if you have a welder handy you could always do what I did to a friends 93 Si. We took his cat off and put a pipe through hit cat (pretty snug fit). Then we hollowed whatever was left inside the pipe. Weld the pipe to the cat to make sure it doesnt slide out, then weld the cat back to the piping.

Also, considering you're in NC; '92 Model cars won't have to pass emissions. What they usually do is go up and tap to see if the cat is hollow. I'm sure you could find an inspection place to pass you.
