The DMV is becoming a commission. In an effort to make the Motor Vehicle Commission more responsive to its customers, the inspection cycle for new vehicles has been extended from two to four years.

The extension applies to new vehicles already purchased or leased in 2001 and 2002 in New Jersey, meeting the following criteria:

The vehicle bears a new car dealer inspection sticker.
The vehicle is currently owned by the original purchaser.
or the vehicle is still in the possession of the original lessee
Vehicle model years 2001, 2002 and 2003 are included in the initiative.
Vehicles that are model year 2000 that were purchased brand new in 2001 are also included.
Extension stickers for 2001 new vehicle purchases/leases are being mailed in 2003.

Extension stickers for 2002 new vehicle purchases/leases will be mailed in 2004.

Extension stickers will be mailed to registrants of the above vehicles in the same month of the appropriate annual registration renewal notices.

Vehicle owners/lessees must place the extension stickers to the inside windshield above the current new car dealer sticker. Motorcycle owners/lessees must carry the extension sticker when operating the motorcycle. The extension stickers may not apply to your vehicle type. Be sure to read the inserts included in the mailings for further information.

If you purchased a new vehicle in New Jersey in January 2003 or later, the dealer should have placed a four-year sticker on the vehicle as applicable to your vehicle type.
