Default 06 EX Shifter detent

I have an 06 Ex and the shifter detent does not allow it to shift into gear. You can use the key in the small slot to manually put it in gear. I removed the small plastic cover on the shifter thinking it may be a cable adjustment but soon became confused. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I had the the same problem occasionally. The brake light switch, near the brake pedal, was broken. Check the switch by pumping the pedal and observe the brake lights or pump brake and hold the shifter and feel (or not) the relay click.
