tire/rim size question for 06 TSX :o

yeah im too lazy to do a thorough search right now. been lookin up stuff all day. anyway, heres my simple question:

i bought the 17" OEM silverstar wheels for my TSX. im wondering if my current stock tires will be transferable to the new wheels. i noticed that the tire size for stock is 215/50 and the size of the tires that come on the silverstars are 235/45s

i called the dealership to see if it would be ok to just use my current wheels, but should i get new wheels that are 235/45?? what kind of effect will that have on me driving?

jschmid, mrchad, where you guys at? hahaha. any help for a tire/rim noob would be appreciated :D

I am pretty sure your stock tires will fit on new rims, unless the new rims are wider the 7.5 in.

You would be much advised to get tires that don't suck so bad and sell the OEM rims/tires on ebay.

The 215/50/17 tire is the Honda OEM type 17x7" alloy wheel. When you say silver star I assume you mean the optional Accord/TSX machine finish alloy wheel?

The dealership should have 3 available type of OEM replacement Alloy wheels. A grey 5-star design, a machine polish finished multi-spoke, and an additional thin wire type multi spoke.

The dealer may also stock a dark bronze-grey type finish 17x7.5" 5-split spoke type: A-spec alloy wheel. These larger rims require (or should) require the wider 235-45-17 A-spec tire.

I would recommend running no wider then a 225mm width on the OEM 7" wide type rim. However a 225-45-17 is about a 1/2" undersized diameter for the car.

If you run a 17x7" rim, a good all season Z-rated tire will most likely be your best tire choice. Example would be the Potenza RE960AS pole position tire.

However, if performance is your main criteria the 17x7.5" rim will give you a larger selection of "maximum" performance tires in the 235-45-17 size range. Something like the Potenza RE050A-pole position or Goodyear DS-G3 become available.

215-50-17 tires are what you need.

Yokohama ES100 are available in that size. They are a summer only Z-rated tire. This is the same tire model name that many dealers use for the A-spec kit. The only downside is that this tire can get noisy over time.

Potenza RE0960AS are an all-season Z-rated tire available as well.

Or you could always reuse the OEM tires...

just as an update, i used my stock tires and everything seems fine. and man, they look sweet :D

thanks for everyone's input

Nice pickup...I love those Silverstars. We just got an 06 TSX this summer too.

There are a handful of different size tires that you will be able to run on the Silverstars. Each have their tradeoffs. Bottom line there is not just ONE tire size that will work well on a certain size wheel.

There is if you want to keep an over all 25.4" rolling diameter and V-rated minimum speed rating on a 7" wide rim. :D

My buddy runs a 225-45-17 on his TSX, that's a wider tread with much better selection of tires. The downside is his over all diameter is now 25.0" Which is ideal for the 4cyl 6th not the newer v6 and 7th gen Accord.

Which I can only assume is the reason for the wider A-spec rims.
