Default 2004 TSX auto gets better gas mileage than manual?

Hey, according to Acura's site, the TSX auto tran gets 23/31 mpg, while the manual gets 22/29. What gives? Are auto getting that good? Or for manuals is the engine actually tuned assuming you want more performance if you buy a manual?

i believe it's the overdrive (5th gear) feature on the AT. it's a longer gear so at cruising speeds, the rpm is lower than that of the manual.

god bless the 5 speed automatic....but...the manual tsx comes with a 6 speed, so shouldn't that even it out?

taken straight from acura website:

the 5th gear on the AT is longer than the 6th gear on the manual.

That can't be the only reason. Look at the city mpg:

auto: 23
manual: 22

Its the same reason. Every gear in the A/T is taller than the sticks, and so is the final drive ratio.

that and the automagic usually shift at lower rpm than most manual drivers would. thanks for the clarification, Hyde. I meant "taller" gear.
