Default stick shift newbie

What's the right footwork for an upshift?

If I release the gas too quick, especially on a 1-2 shift, there's a thunk from the drivetrain somewhere. If I let off the gas a little later, the revs rise a little between shifts.

Do I have to release the throttle all the way on upshifts or can I hold a little throtle on between shifts?

Let up on the gas and push the clutch in at the same time. Just takes some practice and you can get it smooth. You don't HAVE to let off the gas completely, but you don't want it to rev high or you will be burning up the clutch in short order.

don't dump the clutch and don't dump the gas as a basic rule to driving...on upshifts let off the gas but not completely...it takes time but you'll find out how much to lift to get the revs to match when you let off the clutch in the lower gear (like a 2nd to 3rd shift)

after you master the upshift dont forget to practice rev-matching on the down shift!
