Helmet choice for autox
I know it needs to be Snell approved M or SA (2005, 2000, or 95) and must have a face plate.
What about open or closed faced? I read some stuff about airbags that say open face and air bag might be safer. Any tips of getting a reasonable helmet for someone interested in getting into autox? Tips for fit? Anything? |
try on different ones within your budget. it's the only way to know if it's comfortable or not.
I tried on about a dozen helmet and not only for 1min. I wore it for 5-10mins. some were okay initially but painful after 5mins. |
And funny I just mentioned this in another post:
That's like people who ask "What's the cheapest helmet I can buy for track days?" I always hear "How much is your head worth?" I don't know how much water the air bag and closed face helmet issue is. At the speeds you are going and on a closed course I wouldn't be that concerned about this issue. Open faces are supposed to be more comfortable but I never liked them. Plus I wear contacts so I wanted one with a visor. |
Actually, I found some open face helmets that have a full face visor.
Would you guys like the open face if there was a full visor on it? |
BTW, I wear glasses and MUST wear them. Does this effect the helmet I can wear?
|
You should always try on your helmet before buying. I like my full face and I don't have to worry about my sunglasses slipping down while I'm autocrossing in the heat.
