my parents have owned 4 VWs while I have been alive (~85 vanagon, 91 cabriolet, 99 Bug, 2002 Passat) and all of them were virtually problem free. The vanagon had some issues near the end but it had 120k+ and it was built 25 years ago so I don't hold it against it. I would buy a VW

2000 gls had the 2.0L 4 banger. it's not bad as far as reliability goes but it's also slooooooooooooooooooooow as balls. one thing to watch out for is head gasket. if the previous owner didn't change out the coolant religiously at least every other year and with the VW approved phosphate free coolant... the life of the engine will be cut short.

so far the only actual vw troubles i have had are:
1. alternator died 1x,
2. cold start issue (annoying yes, but tolerable).

i guess i have been pretty fortunate with mine.
To say the least...
