Somebody explain to me...
in clear and simple english exactly what "carbon offset" is and how it changes the amount of carbon released into the air at any one point.
No Wiki answers please, I just want to have the laymans explanation because it makes no sense to me and seems like just another "dummy tax" that lines the pockets of greedy bullshit artists.

basically, the money goes towards projects that are aimed at reducing greenhouse gases. that's where it's supposed to go anyway. such projects would be wind farms, solar energy plants, etc.

from wiki, but this sums it up -
"The Kyoto Protocol has sanctioned offsets as a way for governments and private companies to earn carbon credits which can be traded on a marketplace."
What if......, there were 1000s of MASSSIVE Ice making companies making ice pieces the size of a hot air balloons non stop all day/all year long and tossing them into the Arctic and the Antarctic. Will this maybe sorta balance out the melting ice? o:

but def this carbon credit thing is BS on a private level but for manufacturers it could eventually work. The problem is the lack of regulations, standardization and initial data. That with the fact that carbon credits are so intangible makes it seam too abstract to actually work.
