I'm no good at this female protocol stuff, but after reading the OP, my first reaction was to call up the guy (if he is indeed a friend) and say, "I texted your woman just to say whats up and she divulged that you're a clingy, high maintenance bitch. Step up your game or just dump her." At that point, I think the girl would be off limits regardless of what happens.
