The only thing I found in a townhouse built as a rental is that the common wall is not isolating and allows for passage of sound and worst of all smells. If it was built to be sold to an individual they usually have cmu common walls with channel hung drywall on both sides, some even have a double layer of drywall, also they don't have a common attic. My wife and I have been looking to buy one and we are staying away from the ones that are converted from rental to ownership units.

BTW that's pretty steep rent equals about a house payment on 300K.
