To determine the available free space on the PLAYSTATION 3 hard disk drive (HDD):
- On the XMB, go to
(Settings) > 
(System Settings) and press the 
button. - Highlight
(System Information) and press the button - The Free Space will then be displayed.

20gig was sold nov 06-07
40 was sold nov 07- when the 80 came out
20 gig has 4 usb ports, 40 only has two
also, the 20 plays ps2 games and SACD's while the 40 doesn't (I think...)
