I have a buddy who never wears a seat belt and always rants about how it's a "victimless crime." I know it's been debated here on HAN, and I don't agree with him, but I'm not about to argue with him. Funny thing is, he just got a new tundra that beeps at him like a motherfucker, but he just ignores it. h:

My mom sometimes doesn't wear hers, but I've been catching her and yelling at her about it... so she's getting better

Unfortunately people not wearing seatbelts, and dying because of it, indirectly impacts us all. It's one of many causes for increases in insurance premiums, medical bills, etc.

Yes, everyone know's that you should... But should the government be our nanny and require it?

No.

It's up to you to protect yourself, if you don't want to it's not concern of mine or the concern of any one else.

saw a seatbelt checkpoint today on an on ramp. six cars pulled over, two cop cars. my friend had taken the ramp earlier and told me they had a cop standing before all the other cars / cops in a bush looking for it.

The nanny state also pays for a lot of people's healthcare, so therefore has a vested interest in ensuring the health and safety of the population.

Unless you can invent a way for a car's seatbelt chime to selectively disregard occupants with non-Medicare health insurance, then you're probably stuck with seat belt laws.

If you have an objection to Medicare, then that's probably for On-Topic.

(Back when I had my Miata and people asked me how I felt about driving around in a death trap, I liked to point out that thanks to the NHTSA even my death trap had seat belts, crumple zones and airbags.)

You'd be surprised about how many people don't wear theirs. While on a 12 hour shift...I'll probably pass about 10-15 cars a day that buckle up as soon as they see me in my patrol car. They usually wave, half-smile and hope I don't pull them over

personal experience..
If I didnt wear my seatbelt at a specific time in the past. I more than likely would of been road kill.
Unfortunately, the seatbelt kept me in the vehicle so I suffered a few broken ribs/ punctured lung and bruised kidney.

but yea, I know a few people that DO NOT LIKE wearing a seat belt while im driving. So instead of going through a shouting match. I tell them either wear it or get out of the car.
I dont want to get pulled over because of my passengers stupidity and selfishness.
