Five Men Snare 700-Pound Sturgeon
by Staff

It took five Canadian men working in rotation nearly three hours to land a mammoth 700-pound sturgeon from British Columbia's Fraser River.

The Province newspaper in Vancouver reported Tuesday how fishing guide Rod Toth and four unidentified clients were fatigued and astounded last week by the catch in Chilliwack, some 60 miles inland from Vancouver.

The men wrestled the fish to shore, measured it and posed for pictures before tagging it and releasing it, Toth said.

The fish was 10 feet, 6 inches long and 4 feet, 7 inches in girth and was likely between 70 and 80 years old, Toth said.

Mary Sue Atkinson of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society said sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in the world.

They're living dinosaurs from the Jurassic age, she told the newspaper, adding sturgeon can live as long as150 years, grow to 40 feet in length and weigh more than 1,200 pounds. (c) UPI
