DSLR Crew: It's that time again.
 

So I got couple toys to play with for my K10D:

Pentax 50-200mm F4-5.6 for my Zoom (bought it for a great price ~150)
Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 for my Walkaround lens

Metz 58AF Flash (Deliver today)

So I'm looking for a wide angle now that can capture indoors rooms as well as landscape.

I've been eyeing the Sigma 10-20mm for the extra 2mm over the pentax 12-24mm and cheaper price, but also the Pentax Fisheye 10-17mm for a whole $100 cheaper than Sigma mentioned.


As an amateur, I'm torn between the two. I'm leaning more toward the "wide angle look" instead of the barrel distortion of the fisheye. But the fisheye is kinda cool, and can sure capture a lot more of a closed room.

What do you suggest base on what you've been using more often?

the 17-50 is not wide enough for you?

17mm isn't that wide... remember the crop factor.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, but I have Nikon stuff. The 10-20 is a great lens - I've seen tons of great results from it. Haven't personally used one, though.

I'm saving up for the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, which is ~$60 more than the sigma. It's supposed to be the best WA for DX sensors. Not sure if they are releasing it for pentax.

The fisheye is a cool effect, but I could imagine it getting old pretty quickly.

yes i know about the crop factor, but regardless 17mm is still wide. i shoot with my 19-35mm tamron on a xti and its still gets pretty wide shots.

yeah, but in full frame terms, your 19mm and the 17mm is equivalent to 30.4mm and 27.2mm, respectively, and that's not what I would call a wide angle. the 10-20 or a 12-24 is much more wide.

i wouldn't get fisheye for that type of pictures you said you want to take.

get the widest you can afford with the lease amount of barrel distortion.

so whats the best wide angle without barrel distortion?

most have slight barrel distortion, but some are more evident than others. it's pretty simple to correct in PS, and personally, I like a little barrel distortion in certain places, especially with an ultra wide angle. gives some sense of perspective, methinks.

That's what I thought. Though I do like some "cool" factor in the fisheye, but I realize that 90% of the time, I don't want that. It's one of those things you want to do once a while.

I think it's depends on the lens.

Between the Pentax 12-24mm and the Sigma 10-20mm, I'd personally choose the sigma because of the 2mm can make a huge difference. Also, I can shoot at 12mm and won't have the distortion I'd do with the 12-24mm at 12mm.


I need to learn PS better. But yea, I think shoot at 12-14mm with the sigma 10-20mm would give less distortion than the pentax 12-24mm.



Some people also said that I can achieve the same thing with the Fisheye 10-17mm and crop the center, I'd have the wide angle compare to the 12-24mm. That's another interesting though as well. Any insights?
