The new hats I have are plastic in the brim, so water doesn't make a big difference. The trick I use is a big rubber band and let it sit for a few days.

yeah when i wet it, although i dont have a plastic brim, i put it out in the sun as well to dry faster.

its sorta like breaking in a baseball glove h:
