I believe that this cannot be done. You lose the game saves when upgrading.
I thought I read you can backup to external drive, put the new HDD in, the new drive formats, and then you can transfer saves from the external drive to the new drive.
I'd have to check the thread I read... it was on the official ps3 forums
how simple is it to transfer save games and whatnot when upgrading hd?

Correct me if i'm wrong but saved games don't take up much space....I have the ps2 memory adapter and still have saved games from the ps2 games I held onto. You can plug it right up to the ps3.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think Rebeld is talking about let's say you upgrade from a 20GB HD to a 80GB HD.
Also i feel sorry for those who has the 20GB HD's. MGS4 will probably have you perform a install of some sort and they said they had to cut some stuff out of the game cus they weren't able to get it to fit on the 50GB disk. Which means that they will probably have you download 10GB of data. That's half yar space right thurr
