Random numbers ...
When the PS3 launched in 2006, there were roughly 6.8M Xbox 360 consoles sold to date. Today, there's closer to 13.5M.

To date, there are 5.5M PS3 consoles.

Together, there are only 1M stand-alone BR and HD DVD players on the market.

What's it all mean? The over inflated BR sales are from PS3's. Everyone knows it. If MS were to have integrated HD DVD players into consoles, around the time of the PS3 launch, then roughly 6M units would have it.

The installation base of next gen disc players would have been close to even. HD DVD failing is due to Sony's ability to eat the hardware cost ... or Microsoft's inability to support the format they were backing.

I think Microsoft could have afforded to eat the cost...I think it comes down to Japanese vs. American corporate philosophy. No American company would ever launched a product that lost $300 every unit initially.
