Probably was a smart move anyway. Most ATM's have cameras and they could have looked at the time of the transaction and caught your mug.

I'm actually surprised it was still there. They must have walked away right before you walked up. I've left my card in the ATM before at a drive through and when I called the bank they told me within a minute or two it sucks it back in and shreds it.

At my bank, it's typically 30 seconds. The cards get sucked in, and they stay in the machine til it's cleared the next morning. Some banks may shred the card. My bank is supposed to look up the customer's account and call them and notify them that there card hasn't been stolen and to come pick it up at a branch.
