Toilet repair question...hold when flush

My upstairs toilet isn't working right. Normally you flush and it's automatic, we have to hold the handle till it's done. I'm too lazy to stand there everytime, but not too lazy to figure out the problem. What I notice is the flapper closes immediately after letting go of the handle. What do I do to remedy this situation?

Get a new "flapper thing". that should do it.

Lengthen the chain so that there is some slack so that the flapper floats until the water is out, then falls and fills the drain.

replace the flapper.... just a few bucks at home depot.
