Do I have to do anything to windows if I just upgrade my processor? I forgot what I'm supposed to do, a repair with the original windows CD?

 

hm. I don't think you would need to do anything to your windows. It's like upgrading your graphics card, ram, sound card, stuff like that that doesn't require a repair.

 

I don't think your PC will work anymore.

When the hardware signature is altered, Windows will detect that it's not on the same system anymore.

not the same system = new activation number. (you'll have to call M$ support for a new digits)





Are you doing the Mobo + processor or just the chip?

I'm thinking of resetting the CMOS and reformating windows I suppose. I'm just installing the chip, going from single core to dual core

just install windows 3.11. then you won't have this problem.

Its a CPU chip you won't need to re-install or re-activate.

If it was the motherboard then yes you'd need to re-install.

the first time you boot up after the install you're gonna get a "found new hardware" dialog or 2, but it should be fine if you just keep clicking ok. I've pulled a harddrive out of a Gateway computer and booted it on a built system with no problems.
