depends on how much you use it and if its real wood you're burning.

in our old house, you could clearly smell "chimney" ... thus, we had it swept.

my dad burns a creasol (sp?) removing log once a year and have it professionally cleaned once every 3-5 years I beleive

if your roof isn't hard to get access onto and difficult to stand on, just buy the stuff and do it yourself.. thats of course if you have the space to store a bristle brush :P

yea i think my dad wants to try that after they come and do it so he can see hows its done 1st.

its just a big motherfucking steel brush that you shove down the chimney and back up! you have to block off the part in the house if its a open fireplace otherwise you'll get soot everywhere.

They come in various sizes and they have rods that connect together so you can go down a long ways. Only problem about chimney brushes is that it takes a good fuckin work out to clean cause going down is easy, but coming up... haha good job!
