wut is offset

wut is offset, i know it has something to do with the rim, but how do u know which offset to choose, and wut is it exactly?

alls I Know is that it's pissing me off I ordered rims for my integra and the guy called me saying those rims had a 48 offset so they would not fit nicely so i had to choose another kind

offset is how far the center of the rim sits behind of the surface of the axle

large positive offset means that the wheel will sit further towards the center of the car.
