Truth in Horsepower

BY TONY QUIROGA
November 2005

A new voluntary horsepower-testing procedure developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has produced some interesting and perhaps unexpected results for automakers who've decided to abide by the new rules.

The procedures, revised in August 2004, mandate several standards for items such as exhaust back pressure, engine oil, and the number of accessories attached to the engine. Further revisions add a third-party witness to oversee the testing procedure and report the numbers.

Several new GM models that have undergone the test have seen increases in advertised horsepower, although GM isn't retesting most of its models. The 2006 Corvette Z06, which was initially touted as having 500 horsepower, went up to 505 horsepower after the test. Similarly, the 2006 STS-V went from 440 horsepower to 469. Toyota and Honda, which have voluntarily performed the procedure on their entire lineup of cars and trucks, not just the new arrivals, haven't seen the same gains as the General. Both Honda and Toyota were perhpas chagrined to see their horsepower numbers go down. This raises the inevitable question, "Have they been honest in their claims?"

I know BMW lied. They advertised 240hp at the crank. I've dynoed my car 5 different times on 4 different dynos and I've not gone under 215hp. calculating for 15% loss = 253hp crank of if you want 10% drive train loss :bs:

Yes, Mazda has been twice... once for late model Miatas and once again for early RX-8s.

On that same note, Honda got it for later CLs.

Read article :slap:

Honda and Toyota both over stated their numbers on several models.

Seem to recall that the Neon SRT-4 had the power at the wheels they claimed at the crank, maybe so people don't get killed on insurance as much

Ford was also caught overstating in the past with the Mustang V8 engines. They would test 5 engines and if one of them tested at 225hp, they would go with that number.
