I'd still run clean, don't get me wrong.. but I am tired of being treated with contempt and suspicion by my home state. I want to motor on my own terms. Is that too much to ask?

Click and see. If an aftermarket part doesn't have an EO number, it is a de facto illegal modification. That means an instant fail on smog checks, regardless of measured emissions. And if an officer stops you, he can write you up and send you to the CARB Smog Referee.

I agree with the goal of keeping our air clean. Perhaps, CARB means well, but the bureaucratic nature of government prevents them from keeping things simple and affordable. Hence, an even-increasing pile of laws and restrictions that have marginal relevance to the goal of cleaner air.

If the State wants to regulate emissions, that's fine.
But play fair, be objective and be reasonable.

$80 smog tests are not reasonable.
Exempting diesel cars and trucks is not fair.
The CARB Certification process is anything but objective.

Exactly... and AFAIK an EJ20 swap is a reasonable feat.
I still need to do more reading on how the swap goes ... but 220hp would make a light car like a Ghia move quite nicely.. :rick:
