and to answer your question about saab's in general, i happen to like them, they are comfortable cars, fairly stylish (IMO) and fun to drive but the interiors are so-so, the backseat of the 9-3 isnt all that comfortable, the headrest sorta goes into your back unless you adjust it up into the window. the dash's are pretty lame (typical of anything GM owns...)

The previous generation 9-3 (which was really just a slightly facelifted 900, and based on the previous-generation Opel/Vauxhall Vectra) was available as either a 3- or 5-door hatch, or a 2-door convertible. The 9-5 has only ever been available as a 4-door sedan or 5-door wagon. As the car in the second picture is a hatch and is a Saab of relatively modern but not current vintage, it therefore must be a 9-3.

The current generation 9-3 is available only as a 4-door sedan or 2-door convertible. No hatch. The previous generation 9-3, as I have already stated, was only a 3- or 5-door hatch or 2-door convertible. No sedan.
1st gen 9-3 3-door hatch:
1st gen 9-3 5-door hatch:
2nd gen 9-3 sedan:
9-5 sedan:
I have skipped the 9-3 convertibles and 9-5 wagon as they're not part of this confusion.
Not the best looking cars out there but not that bad either. I think they are overpriced and probably wouldn't buy one since they really do nothing for me but to each his own
Old ones are ugly (to put it nicely). The newer models look better, but still don't offer anything that appeals to me. As far as reliability I do see a lot of old ones on the road. But the new 9-3 (turbo 2.0L and only 210HP), doesn't speak much of their engineering.
